College Advising

In addition to premedical advising, I can also meet the needs of the high school student (and his/her parents) looking for appropriate colleges or universities that meet the student's interests and career goals.  I am an admissions counselor for the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and a member of University Advisors Admissions Specialists group (www.universityadvisors.net). I have particular expertise with dual degree health profession programs, (i.e. BS/MD, BS/DDS) but all your concerns and questions regarding college can be addressed and answered.

Two types of services are offered -

Full Service College Advising:

1. Assessment and Recommendations

  • Assessment of academic record
  • Evaluation of interests, skills, and abilities
  • Review of student's criteria for college choices
  • Advice about cost/value, private/public, geography, and other factors
  • Two or more sets of recommendations of colleges and universities that match student's criteria

2.  Creating a list

  • Developing tentative - then final - list of colleges

3.  The Application Process and Thereafter

  • Review and comment on essays
  • Review of other facets of applications
  • Advice about cost and merit aid (when appropriate)
  • Conversations - when appropriate - with admission colleagues
  • Counseling around other issues in post-application period
  • Review of college acceptances and aid offers in the spring

Targeted Service:

For the student who is fairly well prepared but still has some questions. Such as...

  • List of colleges - if is too short... too competitive...too uninspiring. Receive appropriate recommendations for amplifying and diversifying the list.
  • Essay Review - topics...content...tone...revisions... final products.  Receive expert advice with all the necessary ingredients that lead to fine writing.
  • Cost/Aid - the college list excludes lower cost choices... or misses universities with generous merit  and need-based aid programs... or thorny questions about eligibility arise.  Receive assistance in thinking about cost, value, and aid.
  • What you're looking for has changed - criteria have evolved... new thinking and second opinion are needed.  Receive a different perspective.
Fee for Targeted Service is $150 per hour
